Kool and the Gang warmed up the crowd on Saturday evening with their unforgettable hits of the 70’s and 80’s and some instrumental jazz, which went down very well with the audience. La Torre Golf resort plaza was the ideal setting for such an event. With about 90% of a crowd of over 1,000 people being British, Kool had no language problems, despite the fact they were playing in Spain.
The 15 man group, which consisted of the original band members, plus some younger blood, had the crowd swaying their arms in the air, clapping and singing along to the familiar lyrics. Audience participation was all part of the show, with instructions to shout, ‘Oh yeah’ and ‘Oh dear’ throughout one of their biggest hits. The band was having a whale of a time, jamming in between songs, each musician showing off his particular skill. Those at the front had all sorts of impossible looking moves tucked up their sleeves, such as the ‘Island Shake’ which most of the band performed at the front of the stage, provoking whoops of joy and laughter from all those watching.
After a couple of jazz pieces the group broke into the familiar songs of ‘Ooh, La, La, La Let’s Go Dancing,’ ‘Ladies’ Night’ and ‘Get Down On It.’ Everyone was moving to the music, even the most reserved members of the crowd couldn’t keep still, and were seen to be swaying to the beat.
After saying goodbye and leaving the drummer to entertain the crowd hungry for more, the encore was no disappointment. ‘Celebrate’ had everyone reminiscing their disco days in the 70’s and was a great finish to an enjoyable evening.
Kool and the Gang are currently in the middle of world tour. After touring round Spain they will be visiting other European countries and then Japan. This American group started in 1964, and since then they haven’t stopped releasing records and albums. In the last five years they have performed over 500 concerts all over the world and their latest album is aptly titled ‘Still Kool.’ |
